MIT said Wednesday that it will receive a $140 million donation, but the research university said it won’t disclose the benefactor’s identity at the person’s request.

The gift isn’t the largest that MIT has ever received — that was a $350 million donation, announced in 2000, from Patrick McGovern, the late chairman of International Data Group, and his wife. Nor is it MIT’s largest anonymous donation.
